The 3rd release in the RemasTTered series sees Amp Fiddler, one of the Soul & Funk scene's most accomplished players take on a true giant of the cover version world. "Hey Joe" is probably the ultimate in iconic song writting. Composed by Billy Roberts in 1962, it was originally recorded and released as 'Hey Joe, Where You Gonna Go' by California Garage Band The Leaves, who made no less three lightening paced versions of it in a year.
Several other artists recorded the track before Jimi Hendrix saw folk singer Tim Rose performing a laid back, slowed down version at CafE Wha? In New York. Inspired by Rose’s take on the track Hendrix recorded what molt consider to be the definitive version inlate 1966. Since then literally hundreds of acts have covered the track, including Cher, Wilson Pickett, The Creation, The Byrds, Patti Smith, Nick Cave, Seal and Deep Purple.
Joseph ‘Amp’ Fiddler has had a long and illustrious career behind the Keyboard. He made his name as part R&B band Enchantment and went on to become an integral part of George Clinton's Parliament and funkadelic bands during the late 1970’s and 8O's before strinking out on his own. As a solo artist, the jazz inflected funky soul of his ’Walt Of The Ghetto Fly' and 'Afro Strut' albums has gained him a huge fan-base. He has also collaborated with a wealth of A iist included Jamiroquai. Was (Not Was) and Brand New Heavies.
Amp Fiddler’s take on Hey Joe is a Soul master-class. Keeping the tempo relaxed, and the grooves tight and bouncing, it comes as no surprise that this version is a Hammond driven tour de force. Amp’s vocal delivery adds a plainthive pathos that reflects the track’s darker subject matter but the band never loses sight of the funk inherent in the song’s riffs, giving it a sinewy rhythm & blues feel. A soulful guitar solo and interstellar keyboard wig-out lift the track to new heights, before the band let go for a blazing imtrumental outro.

Kicking off with the stylish "find my way" this ep again shows the quality of the Amp Fiddler sound and the breadth of his latest album "Afro Strut". With its unnervingly breezy chorus providing the perfect antidote for a quietly disturbing verse, "find my way" is a beautifully understated snapshot of what is daty to day reality for many Detroiters. Look out for exclusive track Hollywood. The album is being released through FONTANA in the USA following Amp’s recent TV perfomance on the US tonight show.
