From Phi Mu Alpha Fraternity, Omicron Tau Chapter
at MTSU on Myspace

Who are we? Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity is proud to be MTSU's oldest standing social greek letter organization. The Omicron Tau chapter was granted full standing on May 21, 1966. This was almost a year before any other social greek organization was recognized by Middle Tennessee State.

Our active brotherhood includes men representing all of MTSU's colleges. Some are finance majors, others study in the Mass Comm building, and some are music majors. But you DO NOT have to be a music major to join Phi Mu Alpha. You just need a love for music, any kind of music.

We are a social fraternity, and as stated above, you do not have to be a music major to join Phi Mu Alpha. Our activities include community service through music, serenading on-campus sororities, on-campus concerts, participating in homecoming, competing in All Sing (the greek singing competition), intramural basketball and softball, and cooking up wings for Kappa Delta's Annual Wing Fling.

Each Sinfonian brings value, drive, and dedication to the brotherhood. We believe that having these attitudes builds values that are crucial to effective leadership and success after graduation. Famous Sinfonians include conductor Leopold Stokowski, tenor Luciano Pavarotti, philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, jazz trumpeter and band leader Carl "Doc" Severinson, actor Andy Griffith, US Marine Band Leader Col. John Bourgeois, former presidential candidate and New York governor James E. Dewey, former New York City mayor Fiorella H. Laguardia, composer John Philip Sousa, jazz pianist and bandleader William "Count" Basie, "American Idol" winner Ruben Studdard, jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis, and many more.

Becoming a Sinfonian is a lifelong committment to high ideals, values, and instilling in all people an awareness of music's important role in the enrichment of the human spirit. Earning the right to wear our letters means you tow a red, black, and gold line that stretches back more than a century.

George S. Clinton began his professional musical career as a songwriter, arranger, and session musician in Nashville, while earning degrees in music and drama at Middle Tennessee State University. The summer after graduation, George attended the Atlanta Pop Festival and, upon hearing Joe Cocker perform "With a Little Help from My Friends", left his native Chattanooga, bound for Los Angeles
and ready to rock and roll. Clinton became a staff writer for Warner Brothers Music, with songs recorded by such artists as Michael Jackson, Joe Cocker, and Three Dog Night; continued arranging and session work; and, as a recording artist, did albums for MCA, Elektra, ABC, and Arista.
The critically acclaimed George Clinton Band attracted the attention of a movie producer, giving George the opportunity to score his first film, Cheech and Chong's Still Smokin', and, later, Cheech & Chong's The Corsican Brothers. He developed his craft scoring "ninja" movies for Cannon Films, network and cable television movies and miniseries, writing for a wide range of genres and musical styles. The soulful, erotic jazz for Zalman King's Showtime anthology Red Shoe Diaries developed quite a following, and brought more public awareness. His musical inventiveness and versatility in both orchestral and popular idioms have allowed him to contribute memorable scores to such diverse films as the hit comedy Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery and its blockbuster sequels and the hit martial arts fantasy Mortal Kombat and its sequel. Other noteworthy projects include John Waters's A Dirty Shame; Disney's holiday hits The Santa Clause 2 and The Santa Clause 3; Tim Allen's poignant Joe Somebody; Kevin Costner's wild 3000 Miles to Graceland; the scary The Astronaut's Wife, starring Charlize Theron and Johnny Depp; and the sexy thriller Wild Things. Most recent projects include Deck the Halls, the Emmy Award-winning Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee, Harold and Kumar Escape from Gunatanamo Bay, and Mike Myers' The Love Guru. In addition, Clinton has written several concert works; three musicals; and is proud to serve as an advisor at the Sundance Composers Lab. Awards include a Grammy nomination, an Emmy nomination, and 8 BMI Film Music Awards, including their highest honor, the Richard Kirk Career Achievement Award.
